Pearls should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off when dressing.
Pearls can be damaged by hairsprays, perfume, salad dressings, fruit juice, chlorinated water, ammonia, room spray or bleach.
Never keep your pearls in an airtight container such as a safe or a plastic bag. If you must keep them in a safe then place a glass of water in the safe too. Pearls should be exposed to moisture or they will dry out and the nacre will develop cracks. Instead store your pearls in a pouch made out of silk or velvet. Do not store pearls with other gems. They will scratch your pearls.
Don’t leave your pearls in the sun or on a window ledge where sun will dry them out. Keep them away from dry heat.
Never wear your pearls while in the shower, the ocean or a pool.
Never wear pearls when the string is wet. The thread will attract dirt and it will stretch..
If your pearls do get wet, don’t hang them to dry. The silk or string may stretch. Lay them flat on a towel.
Clean them with a special cleaner made especially for pearls or you may wipe them with a damp cloth. Do not use detergents. They should be wiped with a damp cloth every time you wear them.
Of course never use a toothbrush or anything abrasive to clean your pearls.
Don’t use an ultrasonic cleaner.
Be careful about the type of material you wear with the pearls. Some rough (some wools etc.) material will scratch the pearls. |
